史提海默（Florine Stettheimer）不像之前所有女性裸体画那样，吸引男性观众去观看女性身体，也不像马奈的《奥林匹亚》(Olympia)那样具有对抗性。相反她的表达是嘲讽，最终是对女性身份的颂扬。她的裸体画控制了人们的目光，而不是成为人们关注的对象。艺术家因此在传统的男性对所有权的期望和女性体验的现实之间创造了一种张力。她在一首名为“Civilizers of the World”的诗中这样写道:

They like a woman
to have a mind.
They are of
Greater
interest they find.
They are not
very young,
women of that kind.
