Statuette of a girl, made of Pentelic marble. It was found near the lissos river (Athens), where there was a sanctuary dedicated to Eileithyia. Eileithyia, daughter of Zeus and Hera, was the goddess who protected women in childbirth, bringing on the birth pangs and moderating the pain. According to myth, she attended the birth of the goddess Athena. And it was thanks to her presence that Leto succeeded in giving birth to Apollo and Artemis and that Alkmene bore Herakles. Her sanctuary in the area of the river lissos has yielded some other statuettes housed in the Sculpture Collection of the National Museum.These were dedications to the goddess, probably in thanks for a successfully delivery, or for her help in easing the pains of childbirth.
The girl is depicting sitting on the ground on her left leg. Her head is turned slightly to the right. Her hair forms a thick quiff above her forehead. She wears a short-sleeved chiton, girt at the waist. The chiton is also tied with straps that are crossed on her breast, with a medallion at the intersection.She holds a bird in her right hand, resting on her knee.
