If the dull substance of my flesh were thought,

Injurious distance should not stop my way;

For then, despite of space, I would be brought,

From limits far remote, where thou dost stay.

No matter then although my foot did stand

Upon the farthest earth remov`d from thee;

For nimble thought can jump both sea and land,

As soon as think the place where he would be.

But, ah! thought kills me that I am not thought,

To leap large lengths of miles when thou art gone,

But that so much of earth and water wrought,

I must attend, time`s leisure with my moan;

Receiving nought by elements so slow

But heavy tears, badges of either`s woe.

如果我这笨拙的身体是思想，残酷的距离就不能把我阻挡；尽管千山万水，层层阻隔，我也会被带到你的芳居。纵然我与你天涯之隔，对我来说又有何妨？既然轻灵的思想可以越山渡洋，心中一念便可到达你所在的地方。可是，唉！思想毒杀着我，毕竟我不是思想，在你离去之后，我并不能飞跃崇山，跨越海洋；我只是泥和水和成的钝皮囊，徒劳地用悲泣叹息服侍时光；这重浊之物毫无所赐，只剩眼泪，都是悲伤苦恼的标志。
