这原是一首古老的爱尔兰民歌“年轻人的梦（Castle Hyde）”，后经米利金（R.A.Millikin）填词，名为“布拉尼的小树林（The Groves of Blarney）”。十九世纪爱尔兰著名诗人汤姆斯·摩尔（Thomas Moore，1779-1852）又重新填词修改，改名为现在风靡世界的“夏日里最后的玫瑰”。

贝多芬曾校订过这首歌，门德尔松据此曲调写过一首钢琴幻想曲，弗洛托把歌用在他的歌剧“玛尔塔”里。
