“Scarborough Fair”是一首旋律优美的经典英文歌曲，曾被用作第40届奥斯卡提名影片《毕业生》的插曲，曲调凄美婉转，给人以心灵深处的触动。歌的原型是一首古老的英国民歌，其起源可一直追溯到中世纪。美国歌唱家保罗西蒙在改编这首歌时，加入了由其本人创作、加芬克尔作曲并演唱的副歌“The Side of A Hill”（《在山冈的那边》），将两首歌曲完美地结合在一起。由于副歌作为和音在听觉的感受上不是特别强烈，很多人对其不太留意，认为它只是歌唱的一种处理形式，而实际上副歌却是整个歌曲的灵魂，使得这一曲《斯卡布罗集市》不再仅仅是一首哀伤的爱情恋歌，更是一首对美好的幸福生活无限向往的反战歌曲，提升了歌曲的内涵和意义。

  Scarborough Fair这首歌原本是男女对唱的，男士先给女士提出了一些不可能完成的任务，让女方完成，并假设只有在完成了这些任务后，才可以成为他真正的爱人。而这背后实际的意思是让女孩来求助自己，这样他们就可以见面了，实际表达的是一种深刻的思念和盼望。然后女孩针对男孩提出的问题作出回答，并将男孩完成自己提出的要求作为其能够完成男孩提出要求的前题。这样的一唱一和，婉转而深沉，通过反复阐述这些不可能做到的事情从而说明真爱是需要去完成那些表面上看上去不可能的事情来明证的（love sometimes requires doing things which seem downright impossible on the face of it）。也从一个侧面反映出两个人爱的执著而坚定。nothing seems to be impossible in the song.
