You said: “I’ll go to another country, go to another shore,
find another city better than this one.
Whatever I try to do is fated to turn out wrong
and my heart lies buried as though it were something dead.
How long can I let my mind moulder in this place?
Wherever I turn, wherever I happen to look,
I see the black ruins of my life, here,
where I’ve spent so many years, wasted them, destroyed them totally.”
You won’t find a new country, won’t find another shore.
This city will always pursue you. You will walk
the same streets, grow old in the same neighborhoods,
will turn gray in these same houses.
You will always end up in this city. Don’t hope for things elsewhere:
there is no ship for you, there is no road.
As you’ve wasted your life here, in this small corner,
you’ve destroyed it everywhere else in the world.

La Ville
Tu as dit : « J’irai vers un autre pays, j’irai vers un autre rivage,
pour trouver une autre ville bien meilleure que celle-ci.
Quoique je fasse, tout est condamné à tourner mal
et mon cœur – comme celui d’un mort - gît enterré.
Jusqu’à quand pourrais-je laisser mon esprit se déliter en ce lieu ?
D’où que je me tourne, d’où que je regarde
je ne vois que les sombres ruines de ma vie, ici,
là où j’ai passé tant d’années, gâchant ma vie, détruisant ma vie.
Tu ne trouveras point d’autre pays, tu ne trouveras point d’autre rivage.
Cette ville te poursuivra toujours.
Tu traîneras dans les mêmes rues, tu vieilliras dans les mêmes les quartiers, et grisonneras dans mêmes maisons.
Toujours tu termineras ta course dans cette ville. N’espère point autre chose ;
il n’y a aucun bateau pour toi, il n’y a aucune route.
Maintenant que tu as dévasté ta vie ici, dans ce petit coin perdu,
tu l’as détruite partout dans le monde.
