这首歌曲或许可以说是以“地球的名义”而唱的，歌词内容大致是描述当时的环境和社会的破坏与不和谐，表达了作者迈克尔杰克逊对地球的热爱。这首歌曲创作自1995年，当时世界战争不断，环境污染日益严重，在那样的历史背景下，迈克尔杰克逊亲自作词，作曲以及编曲和制作，创作了《地球之歌》。
此曲推出后大获好评，成为迈克尔杰克逊演唱会的保留曲目。首周即勇夺冠军位置并蝉联6周第一名，成为英国单曲榜历史上最重要的圣诞档期冠军曲。而且在整个欧洲大陆《地球之歌》几乎都是前5名的单曲。
《地球之歌》音乐录像的导演是尼克·勃兰特，这部MV被许多人认为是迈克尔·杰克逊拍摄过的最棒的音乐录影。
杰克逊在片中扮演一个失落的救世主形象，他为被人为破坏的环境、被无辜屠戮的野生动物和被战火摧残的世界而悲泣，该片最具震撼性和戏剧性的场面出现在末尾：各地心受创伤的人们与迈克尔·杰克逊一道，在焦土上以一种古老而奇特仪式呼唤神力。大地之母最终响应。在狂风怒号、闪电雷鸣中，在迈克尔·杰克逊近乎绝望的嘶喊中，死者复活，万物重生。

最后的场景是在纽约，森林火灾在一个安全的玉米种植地里模拟。
