这句话1860年最早出现在威尔士的谚语中，原句是“Eat an apple on going to bed, and you’ll keep the doctor from earning his bread”，Gregory Y. Titelman在其词典《Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings》有明确说明。现在的用法1922年出现在出版物中。
